Description
The Director of Strategic Communications leads the planning, development, and execution of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s communications, media relations, and public relations strategy. This role serves as the primary contact for select conference sports, developing and implementing integrated communications and marketing initiatives. The Director oversees the Media Relations Office and plays a critical role in shaping and strengthening the MEAC’s brand identity, ensuring consistent, accurate, and timely messaging across all platforms. Acting as the main liaison between the Conference, its member institutions, media partners, and the public, the Director is focused on elevating the MEAC’s visibility while promoting the accomplishments of its student-athletes, coaches, championships, and programs.
Key Responsibilities
Communications & Media Relations
- Serve as a contact for media inquiries, ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of information.
- Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, feature stories, game recaps, and championship coverage.
- Manage all aspects of media relations for the MEAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament and other championship events.
- Provide regular updates to the Commissioner and executive team on noteworthy achievements, record-breaking performances, and weekly results.
Publications & Content Development
- Oversee production of all MEAC publications, including media guides, championship booklets, game notes, and record books.
- Develop and maintain accurate statistical records, archives, and historical data for all sports and championships.
- Produce annual record books and comprehensive archives of MEAC events for historical and promotional purposes.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency of information on the official MEAC website and digital platforms, updating daily.
Digital & Broadcast Strategy
- Assist broadcast partners with accurate information to ensure produced conference games/events are supported with accurate and timely information for first-class telecasts.
- Collaborate with multimedia staff to create digital storytelling initiatives that highlight the accomplishments of MEAC student-athletes, coaches, and programs.
- Ensure MEAC’s communications align with NCAA reporting requirements and deadlines.
Student-Athlete Recognition & Awards
- Manage the nomination and selection process for weekly honors, All-Conference teams, and annual awards.
- Tabulate and verify results for All-Sports Awards and other conference honors.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise and mentor interns and student assistants within the Media Relations Office.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with Sports Information Directors at member institutions to ensure consistent information sharing.
- Represent the MEAC at all conference championships to provide on-site communications support, media coordination, and website updates.
Other Duties
- Maintain organized records and historical files for all MEAC athletic events, honors, and awards.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Associate Commissioner for External Relations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field required; master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in sports information, media relations, or strategic communications (college athletics experience preferred).
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across traditional and digital platforms.
- Proficiency in statistical software, content management systems, and social media management.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including media, coaches, administrators, and student-athletes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Availability to travel and work nights and weekends as required.
