Company History

On October 13, 1887, his twenty-first birthday, C. F. Sauer founded the company that still bears his name at 17th and Broad Streets in Richmond. It was the first company in the country to provide pure flavoring extracts in 5- and 10-gram cartoned bottles.

In 1929, C.F. Sauer, II purchased Duke's Mayonnaise from Eugenia Duke in Greenville, SC. The family acquired other brands in the years since, including The Spice Hunter, a gourmet spice company based in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Today, the company has thriving retail, private label, and food service businesses at four manufacturing facilities across the U.S. The C.F. Sauer Company has recently signed a purchase agreement by Falfurrias Capital Partners, a private equity firm based in Charlotte, NC. The anticipated closing date, pending conditions of the sale, is July 31, 2019.
